5 simple ways to reduce food waste

This week is Food Waste Action Week!

We want to support WRAP and highlight the issues which arise from food waste.

Fighting food waste has been found to be the number one solution for tackling the climate crisis.

We wanted to share a few food waste facts from WRAP, who are leading the Food Waste Action Week campaign:

- Globally 1/3 of food produced for human consumption is wasted. This equals 1.3 billion tonnes, is valued at USD $1 trillion each year and contributes 8-10% of man-made green-house gas emissions.

- If food waste were a country, it would be the third largest global emitter of greenhouse gases, behind the USA and China.

- The food we throw away directly contributes to the climate crisis. Not only are emissions being produced in landfill but the resources that went into making these are wasted.

- 1/3 of all food waste occurs by households, with 6.6 million tonnes of food thrown away in the UK, each year.

We have thought up some great ways to reduce food waste:

Take a photo of your fridge before you go shopping to make sure that you do not over buy in the supermarket!

Put a piece of kitchen roll in your bag of salad or spinach to soak up the excess moisture and avoid wilting.

Choose wonky vegetables! Fruit and vegetables are wasted every year due to their wonky shapes, irregular sizes and there simply being too many of them!

Get a food bin and start composting! Did you know if a lettuce is put into compost it takes 3 months to decompose, if it is put into general waste it takes 26 years!
